Abstract Painting Classes to Inspire Creativity & Healing

Taught by local artist and instructor, Lindsay Browning, this series of painting classes is a dynamic exploration of different artistic techniques and approaches to abstract and intuitive painting. Over the course of these sessions, participants will delve into various ways of expressing themselves on canvas, focusing on both the emotional and technical aspects of creating art.

Lindsay is a performing, visual, and teaching artist with over 20 years of experience. She has 15 years of teaching experience in dance and theater at the undergraduate level and founded Lovely Devi in 2020, offering yoga and meditation classes nationwide. Her artwork has been featured in solo galleries and appreciated by collectors across the country. Recently, her work was selected for reproduction by Crate & Barrel. Lindsay also led a 12-week painting class for Shenandoah University staff as part of their wellness program.

Together, these sessions offer a well-rounded experience for anyone looking to deepen their artistic practice, with each class providing new insights and techniques for creating both abstract and expressive works. Whether you're looking to explore your emotions through color, experiment with composition, or embrace the freedom of intuitive painting, this series offers the opportunity to unlock your creative potential. All materials are provided.

6/29/25 “Exploring Color and Form” | Learning to create a color palette and an exercise in painting geometric shapes.
*In this session: Explore the process that can be taken to create a cohesive color palette for a painting, learning about personal preference in regards to color and what colors tend to marry well. Then, we will use our color palettes to create a unique piece of art that focuses on free shapes. Our paintings will live in the world of abstract art and therefore, be a symbol of exploration, feeling and serendipity.

7/6/25 “Free Brush Strokes & Layering as a Tool | A practice of painting intuitively, enjoying the process.
*In this session: Explore painting intuitively using free form brush strokes and layers of paint. This process will allow us to create something unique and emotive, something that only YOU could make!

7/13/25 “From Scribbles to Statements” | Using language and markings in our artwork to imbue a sense of storytelling, mystery and poetry.
*In this session: Explore the potential for words (layered into our artwork) to tell a story, inspire interpretation and invoke a sense of mystery and depth.

7/20/25 “Chaos & Control” | Understanding the compositional tool of Radial Design in abstract art making.
*In this session: Learn about Radial Design, a compositional tool used to create paintings that have a strong central focus. Our abstract artwork will aim to have a dynamic relationship between the foreground and the background.

8/3/25 “A Study of Black, White & Grey” | Stripping away all additional colors and focusing on Achromatic colors.
*In this session: Explore foreground and background, minimalism and maximalism and free brush strokes. We will use only black, grey and white as our palette.

8/10/25 “One Line Drawings & Filling in the Lines” | Slowly revealing shapes, images, figures and more.
*In this session: Begin by drawing a shape/shapes with one continuous stroke then we will paint within the encapsulated spaces to reveal something more.

8/17/25 “A Frame Within a Frame & the Use of Monochromatic Color Palettes” | A study on creating raw edges, a homage to the Polaroid.
*In this session: Explore creating a frame within the painting, giving the feeling of a polaroid. We will use a single color/hue and create monochromatic colors, muting the original color. We will work from a darker background to a lighter foreground.

8/24/25 “Dancing Grass & Flowers” | Building a soft, minimal background resembling a sky and adding images of natural elements.
*In this session: Practice creating soft, ethereal backgrounds and images of nature floating through space. We will use what’s called a “Loose Painting Style” which celebrates a lack of specific definition and allows the painter to paint intuitively.
